Music Ministry

“The liturgy is inherently linked to beauty: it is veritatis splendor. . . Beauty, then, is not mere decoration, but rather an essential element of the liturgical action, since it is an attribute of God himself and his revelation.”

Pope Benedict XVI, Sacramentum Caritatis

Welcome To Our Music Ministry

Music is an integral and essential part of the worship life of our community!

Music is provided during our weekend masses: Saturday at 5:30pm and Sunday at 8:30am, 11:30am, and 2:30pm (en Espanol).

For our English-language weekend masses, we use organ, piano, and vocal music with a focus on chant, classical compositions, traditional hymnody, and worship tunes from our rich American and Appalachian heritage.

Adult Choir

The St. Anne Adult Choir is a ministry comprised of volunteer singers and our music director. Our rehearsals are 6-8pm on Wednesdays in the church.

We sing at one mass per weekend from September (usually after Labor Day) through Corpus Christi (in May or June) on a rotation basis; that is, we rotate between singing at the Saturday 5:30pm, Sunday 8:30am, and Sunday 11:30am masses.

We also sing at special services throughout the year, especially during Holy Week, Easter, Advent, and Christmas.

Children’s Choir & Student Choir

CHILDREN’S CHOIR

Children (grades 3-8) are invited and encouraged to join our adult choir for Christmas and Easter services!

We will make announcements in advance of these holiday seasons in order to gather interest from the parish so that appropriate music can be selected.

Please reach out to Cristin Colvin to discuss the timeline for those rehearsals and services.

STUDENT CHOIR

The St. Anne School Choir serves the St. Anne School Community. Students at the school meet once a week to practice music for mass and then help lead their peers during the weekly school mass.

Cantors

Our cantors serve an important role during mass, leading the Psalm and Alleluia and sometimes all the music during the service. We seek strong singers with a desire to lead and to delve into their vocal development a little more intently.

Cantors sing in the choir and participate in choir rehearsals. They may also meet as a small group once a month(ish) to focus on vocal techniques. Individual vocal coaching is also happily provided for cantors.

F.A.Q.

Do I need to audition? No! Everyone is welcome. We delve into vocal technique a little bit during each rehearsal to learn and grow as a group!

Do I need to know how to read music? No! We review music together in rehearsal, and I provide many recordings as opportunities to listen to the music and learn in the way that makes the most sense to you.

When do you practice? We meet on Wednesday evenings, unless we need to reschedule for a special service or a holiday. Our regular practice time is 6-8pm, but have longer rehearsals during Lent. We also livestream our rehearsals privately for members who may be homebound on any given week for health/caretaking reasons. The video is also great for reviewing music we’ve covered!

When do you sing at Mass? We rotate across all weekend masses, so that every month we get a chance to sing at the Saturday 5:30 and Sunday 8:30/11:30 masses.

Do I need to commit to a particular timeframe? No! If you join the choir, you’ll indicate absences on a calendar for planning purposes.

Do you have a contemporary service? At this time, we do not.

Do you use other instruments? We sometimes use other acoustic instruments during special non-liturgical events like Lessons & Carols. However, we aim to focus primarily on the human voice.

Is everything in Latin? No! We do like to encourage incorporation of Latin into our liturgies by using a Latin Mass setting during Lent and providing some special communion songs in the language of The Church. It is a good thing to keep the language alive in our minds, as it is a universal language of the faithful around the world, rich in history. It can provide us fresh insight into well-known texts and transport us into a more prayerful space separate from our day-to-day lives.
